As the first day of free agent frenzy comes to an end, we take a look at one of the more confusing signings GM Steve Yzerman did.

The Detroit Red Wings have taken a gamble on signing goaltender Jack Campbell who was recently bought out by the Edmonton Oilers.
The Red Wings have signed Campbell to a one year deal valued at $775,000 AAV. Although the acquisition doesn't make sense to many Red Wings enthusiasts, the signing poses a very low risk and could potentially generate high rewards.
Campbell's game has gone downhill since the Edmonton Oilers acquired him from the Toronto Maple Leafs. He started very few games for the Oilers last season, and most of the games he started were in the AHL with the Bakersfield Condors.
"But, on a 1-year deal at the league minimum contract, he'll likely end up on the Grand Rapids Griffins to be paired with Cossa and hopefully regain his confidence. If he can regain his confidence, Campbell will be a solid addition to the goaltending depth that Detroit has lacked for some time now."

Despite his poor performances over the past few seasons, Jack Campbell is known to be an incredible locker room presence and teammate. His veteran experience could provide much needed guidance to goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa.
