Described by a top NHL insider as a "square peg in a round hole", the Red Wings could potentially send Vladimir Tarasenko back to a divisional foe.

Detroit Red Wings forward Vladimir Tarasenko hasn't been a good fit with the Detroit Red Wings, and top NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has suggested that GM Steve Yzerman could already be looking to move on from him.

Friedman has now suggested that the Red Wings could even consider sending him back to the divisional foe Florida Panthers, who Tarasenko helped win the Stanley Cup last year.

It's just - if you look at how they've gone, he's sort of the one guy that's been the odd fit and he has a no-trade clause, so ultimately he has control. But I think - I was talking to some people who see the Red Wings a bit more than I do, and they weren't surprised to hear that in the sense that, as the team has gotten better and some players are starting to play better, it has still been a bit of a square peg in a round hole for Tarasenko.

I gotta think that - you know, Florida doesn't have a lot of flexibility or a lot to deal, and they don't have a lot of cap room. But they know the player. That was actually the 1st time I thought of when I got off the air, I bet in particular that Tarasenko would love to go back there too.

But I just don't know where this is going to go out, I think it's safe to say there's something going on there. I think there's an understanding that this has been a harder fit than everyone expected, and I've been told by a couple of different places to not be surprised if something happens. There are a lot of good vibes with the Red Wings, but not in this particular case.

Vladimir Tarasenko has not fit in well with the Red Wings

After not making any major free agent signings at the start of the splurge on July 1, general manager Steve Yzerman opted to sign Tarasenko to a 2-year deal.

Tarasenko was coming off his 2nd career Stanley Cup win with the Red Wings' divisional foe Florida Panthers; he'd also lifted the Cup in 2019 as a member of the St. Louis Blues.

Despite scoring in his Red Wings debut, he's since scored just 6 goals in 52 games since then.
