Will Shai Buium be the Red Wings next star defender?
After the Detroit Red Wings failed to make the 2024 NHL playoffs, they will now look to their prosepects to give them a fighting chance next season.
"You learn that stuff, you learn how to be a better leader, you learn how to win hockey games. That's what you want to do, you want to be a winner."
One prospect in particular is catching the eyes of hockey enthusiast around the league, and its Shai Buium. Buium just came off of a stellar campaign with the university of Denver, where they found championship glory winning the NCAA title in the frozen four. Detroit has struggled tremendously on their blue line, and they will be looking to Buium to make the next jump to the pro level to help bolster the Red Wings back end.
Buium will likely spend next season developing in the Red Wings farm system in Grand Rapids, with one AHL game already under his belt, Griffins head coach Kevin Allen has some high praise for the young defender. But the Detroit fanbase can rest assured knowing they have an all-star in the making. This year for the University of Denver, Shai Buim notched 36 points in 43 regular season games and was a +33 rating on the ice.
"He knows how to win," Grand Rapids coach Dan Watson told DHN's Kevin Allen about Buium. "He's done it, he's a big-game player."
