Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has been unable to escape the injury bug, and it doesn't look like he's going to be able to fully deal with his current ailment.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been forced to play without captain Auston Matthews for the last six games, and that window has now been extended.

The Leafs' captain isn't going to play against the New York Islanders thanks to the effects of having re-aggravated his upper-body injury late last month against the Buffalo Sabres.

He was a participant in today's Leafs practice, though he wore a grey extra's sweater.

Matthews can't accurately say whether or not he'll be able to overcome his nagging injury.

I don't know. I hope so. That's obviously the goal. It's tricky with these things sometimes.

It's a physical sport, it's a contact sport, so things happen out there sometimes that are out of your control. So I'm just trying to manage it as best as I can, and we can, and you just go from there.

Currently, Leafs head coach Craig Berube is in "wait and see" mode with Matthews.

When you're injured as a player and (people) are always asking you 'How you feeling?', it gets annoying. When he's available, he'll let us know. Right now, the situation we're in with him, I'm preparing the team to play without him. We'll know when he's ready and we'll make adjustments.»

The injury has already caused Matthews to miss 15 total games this year, the most that he's missed since sitting out 20 games in his sophomore year in the NHL.
