Don Cherry stirs controversy in latest rant, targeting Gary Bettman and the NHL
Former Hockey Night in Canada host Don Cherry is at it again, targeting Gary Bettman and the NHL for a perceived snub in their expansion plans.
Former Hockey Night in Canada host Don Cherry is once again making his views known, and this time is targeting the National Hockey League for their alleged hesitancy to expand the League further into Canada.
The NHL is on the verge of returning to Atlanta for a 3rd time; both previous Atlanta-based teams were forced into relocation. The Atlanta Flames moved to Calgary, while the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg and became the second edition of the Jets.
Speaking on his Grapevine podcast, Cherry can't believe that despite the presence of a new and ready to use arena in Quebec that the NHL isn't planning on trying to make a professional club work there again.
I still have no idea why there's no team in Quebec. It is the beautiful, lovely arena. Don't tell me that there's no money in Quebec City. Imagine (Montreal) Canadiens going (to play) in there.
I remember going there with the Boston Bruins. And we always had fights in there, but I don't, I don't understand it. I don't understand why they're going back to Atlanta.
The Nordiques, Quebec's 1st and only NHL club, moved to Denver in 1995 to become the Colorado Avalanche.
Since then, the NHL has expanded into Tennessee, North Carolina, Ohio, Minnesota, Nevada, Washington State, and Utah. The only new Canadian-based club was the aforementioned 2nd iteration of the Jets, who have faced their own financial issues in recent years.
Cherry was fired from Hockey Night in Canada in 2019 after his controversial remarks involving immigrants.
