The NHL unrestricted free agency season is about to begin and one of the best players in the game is a pending unrestricted free agent who is Steven Stamkos. Stamkos is coming off his final year of his eight-year deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning and it appears that four teams are linked for his services.
Stamkos, has made it a career in Tampa where he has been to numerous cup finals and has one the trophy twice. The teams in question are the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens and the Nashville Predators.
The 34-year-old centerman continues to show that he still has what it takes to be an elite NHL player. During the 2023-2024 season, he scored forty goals along with 41 assists for 81 points.
Stamkos will help contender and builders
Both the Detroit Red Wings and the Montreal Canadiens are continuing to add talent to their new core of players and a player like Stamkos could certainly give them a boost offensively. As for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Nashville Predators, the Leafs would be in a position of competing now which could be an attractive asset for Stamkos as he was also sought after by Toronto eight years ago.
The Predators could also use a player like Stamkos with his winning pedigree as the team is looking to take the next step and becoming a perennial playoff contender again.
In the long run, it will come down to what Stamkos is looking for. Weather, he's looking for another cup run or looking to finish out his career with the lightning or another team in a smaller market.
One things for certain, he will gather a lot of interest.
