A troubling update regarding Mitch Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs has emerged from trusted NHL insider Chris Johnston of TSN.

According to Johnston, the Leafs are expected to "run it back" with their "Core 4" players for the upcoming season before letting Mitch Marner walk in free agency next summer. This development follows the Leafs' decision not to trade Marner or William Nylander last off-season before their no-movement clauses took effect.
Nylander recently signed an eight-year, $92 million extension ($11.5 million AAV), and John Tavares has made it clear he intends to stay with the Leafs. This has shifted trade speculation onto Marner. Questions about whether Marner will be traded, leave as a free agent, or get an extension have been circulating and will likely continue until resolved or until training camp starts.
Johnston discussed these issues on The Steve Dangle Podcast, suggesting that Marner will likely walk as a free agent rather than sign an extension. He explained that while the likelihood of Marner walking isn't significantly higher than re-signing, the Leafs seem disinclined to offer him the option to stay.
This situation raises concerns, as letting Marner walk without compensation could be a significant mistake for the Leafs. The 27-year-old forward has accumulated 639 points in 576 regular season games and 50 points in 57 playoff games for the Leafs, despite criticism for not performing as well in the playoffs.
Do you think Steve Yzerman and the Red Wings should pursue Mitch Marner next season?
