Ottawa Senators GM Steve Staois has faced a challenging learning curve in his first eight months on the job.

Recently, TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger reported an embarrassing situation for Staois involving the trade of defenseman Jakob Chychrun to the Washington Capitals. The Senators received defenseman Nick Jensen and a 2026 third-round pick in exchange.

During the draft in Vegas, Dreger mentioned that Staois had claimed to other general managers that he had a first and second-round pick offer for Chychrun but was searching for more. This claim has been met with skepticism, as it seems unlikely that Staois would have turned down such a deal.

The best available deal might have been the one made with Washington, and it's plausible that Staois was trying to negotiate better offers from other teams. However, if the claim was a bluff, it raises questions about his tactics and credibility among other GMs.

Fans and insiders are eager for the Senators to become competitive and relevant again. While Staois should be given the benefit of the doubt, he must look up to his approach to earn respect and succeed.
