In 2017, he signed a seven-year, $42 million contract with the Winnipeg Jets. The 28-year-old concluded the 2023-2024 season with 61 points in 82 games and a plus/minus of +27.
One of the Red Wings' top priorities this offseason is to sign a top-six winger to add more depth to the roster and Ehlers would be the perfect candidate for that. With a player who doesn't rely heavily on power plays to score and whose assist stats have increased consistently year after year, coupled with steady production, there's no doubt he would be a good fit for the Red Wings.
The main problem is this: the Jets won't let him go for nothing in return. The logical reason why the Jets would trade him would be for a top defenseman. The Red Wings don't have this much to offer on the defensive end. Another alternative is they make space, in terms of the salary cap, to sign a free agent this way Steve Yzerman can make an offer that would actually be appealing to the Jets.
