A restricted free agent, Swayman was left off the training camp roster due to the impasse. The Bruins traded Linus Ullmark in the offseason, aiming to make Swayman their No. 1 goaltender, but his future with the team now hangs in the balance.
Swayman had an impressive 2023-24 season, posting a 25-10-8 record with a .916 save percentage and a 2.53 goals-against average. In the playoffs, he maintained a .933 save percentage over 12 starts. Following a contentious arbitration hearing last year, Swayman earned $3.475 million for the season. Now, he's reportedly seeking a salary of $9.5 million per year, similar to defenseman Charlie McAvoy's contract. The Bruins' counteroffer is said to be in the $6-6.5 million range, creating a notable gap in negotiations.
The two sides have until December 1 to reach a deal, or Swayman will be ineligible to play this season. Meanwhile, the Bruins face uncertainty in goal during training camp. Joonas Korpisalo, acquired in the Ullmark trade, is expected to step in, but he struggled last season with an .890 save percentage. Brandon Bussi, who performed well in the AHL, lacks NHL experience. Bruins GM Don Sweeney and head coach Jim Montgomery are expected to address the situation, which remains a focal point as training camp progresses.
