28 years ago, Steve Yzerman made an incredible slap shot which sent the Wings to the 1996 conference finals in a double-overtime win vs. the St. Louis Blues.
While being scoreless the whole game, Yzerman stole the puck and history was made. The Blues had Wayne Gretzky in the lineup thinking it would give them a chance to advance to the finals, but Yzerman said 'no'.
Ultimately, the Wings lost in six games versus the Colorado Avalanche who won the Stanley Cup.
In the 1995 Stanley cup finals, the Red Wings lost against the New Jersey Devils. However, we will remember that they had one of the best season in the NHL at the time with a record of 62-13-7. This had set a new record by passing the Montreal Canadiens had since 1977.
The series versus the Blues in 1996 was intense and it all came down to a battle of goalies. Right after this victory, history was made and one of the most iconic rivalry was born which was versus the Avalanche.
