The Detroit Red Wings were linked to New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba over the summer, who already has local ties.
He was born in the metro-Detroit suburb of Rochester Hills, and later played for the nearby University of Michigan in Ann Arbor before beginning his NHL career.
After the Red Wings sent Jake Walman to the San Jose Sharks, many believed that it was the pre-cursor to a bigger move, perhaps even to acquire Trouba.
But no deal materialized, with the prevailing theory being that Trouba didn't want to uproot his wife, a doctor with a residency at a local New York hospital.
Meanwhile, Trouba is rumored to be right back on the trading block by the Rangers and GM Chris Drury, who recently indicated that he's willing to make major moves which could even include trading Chris Kreider.
Former NHL in-game analyst Pierre McGuire suggested during a recent taping of "The Sick Podcast" that the Rangers could consider stripping the captaincy away from Trouba.
With plenty of rumors swirling around potential moves the team could make, head coach Peter Laviolette did his best to downplay those rumors following a recent loss.
If the Rangers strip the captaincy away from Trouba, it could effectively signal that they're ready to move on from him. Could he be more willing to consider a trade back to his home state of Michigan?
