At some point, tough questions will arise about Steve Yzerman's ability to lead the Detroit Red Wings where they need to be. A bold statement from the Bleacher Report said they would be missing the playoffs for an eighth consecutive season would likely catalyze such scrutiny.

This scenario isn't far-fetched, given the Red Wings' glaring issue from last season—defense—remains unaddressed. The situation might have worsened with the trade of Jake Walman to San Jose in a salary dump move. While the team already had goal-scoring capabilities, the offseason focus remained on offense, highlighted by the re-signing of Patrick Kane and the acquisition of Vladimir Tarasenko.
In isolation, these moves seem beneficial. Kane will enhance the power play, and Tarasenko will add scoring depth. However, neither will contribute significantly to defensive stability, which hampered the team's success last season.
Without substantial improvements in their defensive play, the Red Wings risk another disappointing season, potentially leading to intensified scrutiny of Yzerman's tenure and decisions.
