The Detroit Red Wings signed forward Dominik Kubalik to a 2-year contract ahead of 2022-23, and he played moderately well in what would be his 1st and only year with the team.
He finished 3rd overall among all Red Wings players with 20 goals, and while he was one of the main components of the offense, he would be traded in mid-July to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Michigan-native Alex DeBrincat.
But he failed to replicate the numbers that he posted with the Red Wings in his only year with the Senators, scoring just 11 goals with four assists; ironically, one of his goals would come in a win over the Red Wings last December.
Unable to find a taker in the NHL, Kubalik signed with Ambri-Piotta of the Swiss National League; his contract included a clause that would allow him to leave and return to the NHL if he was able to secure a contract before December 15.
The bad news for Kubalik is that unless something changes in the next 48 hours, his NHL career could very well be over. He explained that his camp hadn't received much interest, though he tries not to think about it too much.
Kubalik initially played with the Chicago Blackhawks before signing with the Red Wings in 2022. He's also posted good numbers with Ambri-Piotta, leading them in scoring with 22 points (12G, 10A) in 28 games.
