Derek Lalonde gets 100% real after Detroit Red Wings lose Simon Edvinsson to injury
The Detroit Red Wings lost defenseman Simon Edvinsson during last night's win over the Flyers, causing them to improvise with the ice time of several other players.
While the Detroit Red Wings picked up a massive win against the Flyers during last night's game at Little Caesars Arena, they also experienced a costly loss.
Defenseman Simon Edvinsson, who routinely plays on the top pairing with Moritz Seider, left the game during the 1st period with an injury, and was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the night.
The Red Wings were forced to improvise, as Moritz Seider eventually earned a season-high 28:02 of ice time, while Ben Chiarot logged a season-high 29:14 of ice time along with a +3 rating.
Coach Derek Lalonde singled out how the defense held the Flyers to just 19 shots during the contest, especially in the wake of the loss of Edvinsson.
I thought both played really well. I think we had (the Flyers) registered for three chances in the third.
We gave them 19 shots the entire game and it's a pretty good offensive team and obviously those two are leading it playing most of the minutes. So good on them. They were winning shifts for sure.
Detroit's offense came through as well, scoring six times; among the goals scored was J.T. Compher's first time finding the back of the net since late October. And as he put it, playing sound defensive hockey opened the door for the offense.
I think in the room, we know that we're capable of scoring more, but we don't want to give up more at the same time. And I think for a good portion of the game tonight, we earned our goals by playing well defensively and playing the right way.
And that's the way you want to create offense, not trading chances all game long and just trying to score more goals. And I think that's what we've been preaching and working on is earning our goals the right way.
