While the Detroit Red Wings got bad news on the injury front, the latest updates aren't all that bad.
The will have to play without defenseman Simon Edvinsson for the next handful of games, as he's unavailable for tonight's Original 6 clash against the divisional foe Montreal Canadiens at Little Caesars Arena (7:00 PM, FanDuel Sports Detroit, 97.1 The Ticket).
Edvinsson was hurt during Wednesday night's game against the Flyers just minutes into the opening period, and wasn't able to return.
As a result, several Red Wings appeared in season-high minute totals, including both Moritz Seider and Ben Chiarot. In Edvinsson's absence, young rookie Albert Johansson will be called upon.
According to coach Derek Lalonde, it would be a "tall task" for Edvinsson to play on Monday night against the St. Louis Blues, meaning that he'll miss at least the next pair of games; both against the Canadiens in a home-and-home series.
Meanwhile, Lalonde is confident that other players will be able to step up their games in Edvinsson's absence.
It's more minutes for our other (defensemen) and they'll step up. I'm looking forward to the opportunity for the other guys.
The good news for the Red Wings is that Edvinsson isn't expected to be out long-term, which would be a devastating setback for a team that already struggles keeping the puck out of their net.
