Derek Lalonde might have revealed who will be the starting goalie for the Detroit Red Wings in 2024-25 season

Ville Husso appears to be in a prime position to lead the Detroit Red Wings' goaltending corps heading into the 2024-25 season as coach Derek Lalonde prepares to assess his readiness during preseason.

After dealing with injury setbacks last season, Husso hasn't played a full 60-minute NHL game since December 2023, so he'll need live game action to shake off any rust. Lalonde recognizes that Husso will need significant reps, both in practices and preseason games, to return to top form.

Detroit's eight preseason games and the Red and White intrasquad match will be critical for Husso as the team evaluates its goaltending situation. Husso, Alex Lyon, and Cam Talbot are vying for the starting spot in what Lalonde calls a "clean slate" competition. While Jack Campbell is likely to start the season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, he remains in the mix, especially if injuries arise.

Lalonde's decision to carry multiple goalies mirrors last season's approach, which proved effective despite some practice challenges due to limited ice time. Husso, meanwhile, feels ready to go after a summer of rehab and training, expressing his eagerness to get back into action. His teammates, including Alex DeBrincat, have praised Husso's performances in informal skates and the early days of training camp, noting that he looks like his pre-injury self - battling hard and being tough to score on.

«It is a true clean slate,» Lalonde said. «I think over the last two years, all three of those goalies, when I say those three goalies, we kind of have a vision. Ville, Cam and Alex have had really nice stretches in this league. Proved they can win in this league and we'll look for one to step up. You know, Jack has obviously done that also. So obviously we have some numbers in camp, which is a little unique, but it's a positive.»

If Husso can stay healthy and perform well during the preseason, he's poised to be a key part of Detroit's push for a more competitive season. His health and consistency will be crucial for the Red Wings as they seek stability between the pipes.
