It's a tale of two polar opposites for the Detroit Red Wings when it comes to their special teams play this year.

Entering yesterday's game against the New Jersey Devils at Little Caesars Arena, the Red Wings had the NHL's sixth-best power play.

However, their penalty killing was ranked dead last among the 32 NHL clubs, and thanks to the three power play goals they allowed against the Devils, those numbers dipped even further.

If the season were to end today, the Red Wings would finish with the worst penalty killing percentage in NHL history, a record originally set by the Los Angeles Kings in 1980.

Simply put, it's the biggest reason why the Red Wings don't have more points in the standings according to coach Derek Lalonde.

We have to figure it out. It's killing us. It's just killing, killing our momentum.

The Red Wings had leads of 2-0 and 3-2 before the Devils stormed back on both occasions to tie the score and then take the lead.

Tyler Motte, a defensive forward who also scored his first goal as a Red Wing in the loss, also expressed his disappointment.

On the penalty kill, we take a lot of pride to get it done. We had an opportunity to get out of the first period and have a lead and we didn't get it done.

Lucas Raymond, who scored for the 5th straight game,

Every team we play it feels like has a lot of skilled players. The Devils have a lot of firepower up front.

But if we do what we're supposed to do, we can play against any team. Their power play was a huge part.

We had some looks on our power play and we didn't capitalize as much.
