Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan was blunt in his assessment of how his team performed during last night's 5-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Detroit Red Wings were beaten 5-1 by the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena in last night's game, despite outshooting their opponent by a near 2-1 margin.

However, those shot margins mean little to head coach Todd McLellan, who not only pointed toward the low percentage of most of the shots but also called out the power play for missing a pair of early chances in the 1st period.

We were slow, sloppy. Passing was not crisp. We were looking off what was clean and trying the more difficult play. I think when you get one [power-play goal] in a game, you got to be fairly satisfied. We're probably getting a little spoiled here expecting two or three a night, and that's not the way it works in this league.

«The power play got us one. The penalty kill let us down because we gave up two, but over and above that it was our play around our paint that I was not happy with.

You can't get fooled by our 40 shots, or whatever it was. We want to be a volume shooting team and we were, but we had zero presence in and around our net. When Vasilevskiy sees it, he's going to have zero problem stopping it.

He made saves, give him credit, but at the other end of the rink, our net play wasn't where it needed to be.

The Red Wings will play the Dallas Stars tonight at American Airlines Arena, another building in which they've not had much recent success in.

Alex Lyon is confirmed to get the start, which will be his first since his injury against the Ottawa Senators on January 7.
