Thursday night's game featured more of the same for the Detroit Red Wings in what has become yet another truly frustrating year for the players and fans.
They were defeated 2-1 by the Ottawa Senators, who scored the game-winning goal with just 41 seconds left in regulation after goaltender Ville Husso whiffed on a shot from the top of the slot from Josh Norris:
The Senators enjoyed a 9-0 advantage in shots midway through the first period before the Red Wings got their first chance on Linus Ullmark; they finished by outshooting Detroit 32-20.
The Red Wings also once again got into penalty trouble, making five separate trips to the penalty box.
But in what's been a rarity this year, their NHL-worst and historically bad penalty killing didn't yield a single Senators goal.
A clearly frustrated Dylan Larkin spoke candidly to reporters afterward, and and made a blunt admission.
The Senators have had the upper hand over the Red Wings for the last two years, which included the infamous pair of back-to-back beatings by a combined score of 12-3 in March 2023 that ended Detroit's chances of a playoff spot.
Ottawa also defeated the Red Wings three times last year, including an overtime win in Sweden, along with two wins at Little Caesars Arena.
