The Detroit Red Wings need star forward Alex DeBrincat to become a significantly more reliable offensive force in his second year with the team.

Last summer, Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman made a major move within the Atlantic Division, acquiring star winger Alex DeBrincat in a blockbuster trade. Now 26 and entering his prime, Alex DeBrincat signed a lucrative four-year extension averaging $7.875 million per year to stay with his hometown team.
Alex DeBrincat debut season with the Detroit Red Wings was solid, and his presence played a key role in attracting future Hall of Famer Patrick Kane to join the team. Kane signed a one-year deal to stay in Detroit, and despite their nine-year age difference, he and DeBrincat quickly became close both on and off the ice. Their chemistry, despite some defensive shortcomings, has been evident.
Alex DeBrincat pregame interactions with Kane and their families have been heartwarming, with the duo's kids often sporting each other's jerseys. However, consistency will be crucial for Alex DeBrincat in the upcoming 2024-25 season. In his first year with Detroit Red Wings, he tallied 27 goals and 67 points over 82 games. While these numbers are respectable, Alex DeBrincat struggled with consistency, scoring 17 goals and 38 points in the first half of the season, but only managing ten goals and 29 points in the latter half, including just four goals in the final 22 games.
A notable issue was his tendency to hit the post frequently and his shooting percentage of 11.4%, which, although an improvement from the previous year, was still below his peak performance with the Chicago Blackhawks. Ideally, a shooting percentage of 13-15% could have elevated his goal tally to the mid-30s. Additionally, Alex DeBrincat needs to increase his shot volume; he recorded 237 shots last season, significantly fewer than in previous years.
Despite these challenges, Alex DeBrincat's 50.0% Corsi For Percentage and a career-high Relative Corsi For Percentage of 5.5 at even strength indicate his contributions were positive. With improved consistency and a more comfortable fit alongside Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond on Detroit's top line, DeBrincat has the potential to help the Detroit Red Wings make a push for the playoffs after an eight-year absence. If he can elevate his game to match the point-per-game production of Larkin, Kane, and Raymond, the Detroit Red Wings are likely to see significant progress.
