The Minnesota Wild secured a 4-3 victory against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, but the win was overshadowed by their frustration with the game's officiating.
Players didn't hold back their discontent, particularly targeting NHL referees Ghislain Hebert and Jake Brenk, whose calls left the Wild fuming.
Among the most vocal was Wild forward
Marco Rossi, whose critique of the officiating might just catch the attention of NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman-and possibly his wallet.
Rossi zeroed in on a specific moment involving Detroit's
Patrick Kane, a seasoned star known as "Showtime."
The incident occurred when Kane went down in the corner, drawing a two-minute tripping penalty on Rossi. Convinced that Kane exaggerated the fall, Rossi didn't mince words.
«Honestly, I'm not sure that was a penalty,» Rossi remarked post-game. «The refs were brutal today. It happens, though.»
He wasn't alone in his suspicion-some fans echoed his belief that Kane took a dive, with one quipping on X,
«Patty Kane should try out for the Olympic diving team in 2026.»
You can judge for yourself with the clip below:
The play sparked a broader conversation online. Another fan on X suggested Kane deserves a fine for embellishment, writing, «NHL needs to look at this»
Under NHL Rule 64, diving is taken seriously-a first offense earns a warning, while a second brings a $2,000 fine.
The rule aims to crack down on players who repeatedly exaggerate to draw penalties, and Rossi's comments might prompt the league to review the incident closely.
Could Kane be facing discipline?
Interestingly, Kane's record is remarkably clean for an 18-year veteran.
His only prior fine came in 2017 for a slash against Minnesota's
Matt Dumba.
If the NHL's Department of Player Safety digs into this latest play, it could mark a rare blemish on his ledger.
For now, the Wild are savoring the win-but their gripes with the refs, and Rossi's pointed jab at Kane, have added some extra heat to an already fiery matchup.
