Red Wings Take Major Step in Removing Broadcasted Games From Cable With Amazon Prime Deal
Fans in the Motor City now have a new option to be able to watch the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Tigers and Detroit Pistons - through Amazon Prime.
Fans who normally watch games of the Detroit Red Wings along with the NBA's Detroit Pistons and MLB's Detroit Tigers now have a new opportunity to watch their favourite teams.
But this is a major step in removing televised games from cable, as several other NHL organizations have already done, such as the Chicago Blackhawks.
Fans are quite upset, with the flagship of the Red Wings taking this route, and next year games could be removed off cable for all.
Amazon Prime has entered into a partnership with FanDuel Sports Detroit, the flagship station of the Red Wings, Tigers and Pistons. An add-on, which will cost $19.99 US per month, can be downloaded by users who already have an Amazon Prime account.
Prime customers can subscribe to FanDuel Sports Network today by visiting the Prime Video app or amazon.com/channels and navigating to the subscriptions section to unlock an array of live, local sports programming tailored to their region.
Main Street Sports Group President of Distribution and Business Development Eric Ratchman said the following about the new partnership and how they are "always looking for new and innovative ways" to help out local sports fans:
This relationship with Prime Video gives fans another way to watch their favorite local teams and underscores the essential role our distribution partners play in driving our future growth. We're excited to offer a seamless and convenient way to stay in the game.
An Amazon Prime membership normally costs customers a total of $14.99 per month and $139 per year.
Tigers games were not broadcast for a time during the summer after Comcast was unable to come to an agreement with the company on tv rights, which was previously known as Bally Sports (and before that, Fox Sports).
