Despite a three-year, $10.2 million contract, Justin Holl was scratched for over half the season, playing just 38 games with five assists and a -8 rating. His possession metrics were the worst of his career, controlling only 42.6% of expected goals.
Detroit's decision to trade Jake Walman and not buy out Holl, which would have incurred a $1.13 million dead cap hit for four seasons, was questioned. Instead, they signed Vladimir Tarasenko and retained Patrick Kane, but these moves are seen as modest improvements.
With Walman gone and pressure on young players like Simon Edvinsson, Holl might play a bigger role this season. If his performance doesn't improve, a buyout next June could be considered, freeing up over $2 million in cap space for 2025.
This would provide financial flexibility, especially with key players' contracts settled.
