The Detroit Red Wings have one of the highest-regarded goaltending prospects in the National Hockey League, who just picked up his 1st career victory.
But while Sebastian Cossa gets the bulk of the hype from fans looking toward Detroit's future in the crease, they also have another exciting prospect known for the use of the pillows.
Trey Augustine currently plays locally for the Michigan State Spartans, located in East Lansing (approximately a 90 minute drive from downtown Detroit).
Detroit made him their 2nd round pick (41st overall) in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, and he's in the midst of his collegiate career before he makes the leap to the Red Wings.
During last night's Spartans game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Augustine stonewalled an opponent in the shootout and tossed the puck back in his direction.
After the final shooter failed to beat him, Augustine immediately turned and fired up the crowd by raising his arms in celebration:
Born locally in the nearby Detroit suburb of South Lyon, Augustine is still only 19 years old and grew up playing in the local HoneyBaked Hockey system before joining the U.S. National Development Program.
This year, he has an impressive stat line with the Spartans, going 10-2-1 while posting a .931SV% and a 1.91 GAA.
The Red Wings have several players on their current roster and in their system who have played for notable Michigan collegiate programs:
-Dylan Larkin, Andrew Copp, J.T. Compher (University of Michigan)
-Red Savage (Michigan State Spartans)
