Congratulations to former Detroit Red Wings forward Alex Chiasson, who has decided to hang up the skates after playing in over 600 National Hockey League games.

Former forward Alex Chiasson, who briefly played for the Detroit Red Wings, has decided to hang up the skates after playing in over 600 career National Hockey League games.

The Red Wings first acquired Chiasson when he agreed to a professional tryout with the Grand Rapids Griffins in November 2022; he later played 20 games with the Red Wings that year, reaching 9 points (3G, 6A) in 20 games.

He won the Stanley Cup as a member of the Washington Capitals in 2018; he also played for the Dallas Stars, Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks.

He failed to attain a contract on a Professional Tryout in 2023 with the Bruins, and the same occurred with the Red Wings in October 2024.

During Training Camp this past fall, Chiasson seemed to recognize the writing on the wall.

Obviously, I went through quite a bit last year, and I decided that I wanted to give myself another shot and play. Obviously, really appreciated my time here in Detroit and in Grand Rapids."

If we go back maybe a year from today, I wasn't sure where my career was at. Thought maybe that was it for me. Hockey was hard physically, but just life in general wasn't much fun. So went through the process and ended up getting surgery in January, and here we are today. [I'm] grateful for the opportunity to be here, obviously worked really hard to come back.

It's not easy at 33 to put in the work and all that, but you can only do this for so long, and hopefully I can show what I can do.
