Former Red Wing set to feature in NHL documentary
At 101 years old, Wochy, who celebrated his birthday on Christmas Day, becomes the focus of a new film by NHL Productions.
Wochy isn't just a record-holder for his age; he's a true Red Wings legend. Turning 101 on Christmas Day, he's the oldest living NHL player and the first Red Wing to reach 100. His NHL career was short but impactful. In the 1944-45 season, his only full season, he scored 19 goals and 39 pointssetting rookie records for the team.
''What can I say?'' Wochy said during the film. ''I'm still here.''
In 1945, Wochy nearly captured the Stanley Cup with the Red Wings but lost to Toronto in seven games. After WWII, NHL spots were scarce. Wochy and Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe, were linemates with the USHL Omaha Knights. Despite an unwritten rule, Wochy married his wife, Shirley, mid-season.
