The Detroit Red Wings started this year with three goaltenders vying for the starting position.
Ville Husso and Alex Lyon were back for another year, while Cam Talbot was signed over the summer after playing last year with the Los Angeles Kings.
But Husso's first start of the season against the Pittsburgh Penguins on opening night was nothing short of a disaster, and he's been demoted to the AHL; the torch is being carried by both Talbot and Lyon.
Meanwhile, the Carolina Hurricanes are in extreme earnest with injuries to Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov; Andersen underwent surgery and will miss the next several weeks, while Kochetkov is in concussion protocol.
NHL analyst (and former goaltender in his own right) Kevin Weekes stated that the Hurricanes are considering making a move to bring in a goalie while both Andersen and Kochetkov are on the mend:
Both Husso (0-2, 4.92 GAA, .811 SV%) and Lyon (4-4-0, 2.75 GAA, .911 SV%) are in the final years of their respective deals.
Talbot (5-4-2, 2.62 GAA, .921 SV%) is signed through 2025-26 and is largely seen as a bridge-style player while prospect Sebastian Cossa continues to marinate in the AHL.
But Husso's annual salary is $4.75 million, and the Hurricanes have less than $100K remaining in salary cap space.
Lyon's deal is far more reasonable at less than $1 million.
Yzerman is good friends with Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour; could he be preparing to toss him a bone?
