The Detroit Red Wings are stuck in a purgatory-like state in terms of their roster construction.
While they have a handful of very solid pieces like Dylan Larkin and a budding potential superstar in Lucas Raymond, they're still lacking in true game-changing talent.
It didn't help things when they failed to land a top draft selection - not only this, but players who fit that description in previous drafts like Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, Sidney Crosby and Jack Hughes don't grow on trees.
As part of his lengthy recent post diagnosing what needs to change for the team, ESPN's John Buccigross suggested a possible link between the Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche star forward Mikko Rantanen.
One of the most dynamically gifted players in the NHL today, Rantanen is coming off consecutive years of 100+ points and is on pace to once again reach that threshold this year.
He's also a pending free agent, and is projected to land as much as $14 million per season on the open market.
Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman currently has three players on the roster who each make north of $8 million annually in Dylan Larkin, Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond.
Would he be willing to nearly double that amount by securing Rantanen on the open market if he couldn't come to terms with the Avalanche?
