Red Wings forward Joe Veleno was recently elevated to the top line with Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin, and he's responded in a major way.

One of the first moves that Detroit Red Wings new head Coach Todd McLellan made upon his arrival back in Detroit was to move forward Joe Veleno to the top line.

Playing with Lucas Raymond and Dylan Larkin, Veleno has responded with some of his best hockey of the year, and he indicated that he's done so simply by using his strengths to his advantage.

I think just continue what I've been doing: Using my speed, forechecking well, having good sticks on the forecheck, protect the puck down low, and obviously retrieve pucks for those guys.

They like to make plays, and they're gonna find each other, but just try to be at the right spot, go to the net, use my speed, and try to complement those guys.

Veleno also knows what he has to do in order to keep up his newfound success.

Retrieving pucks, being hard on the forecheck, winning battles, and obviously I think plays will start to open up. I think we've got a lot of speed on that line, so could be dangerous.

McLellan, who is getting better acquainted with Veleno, stated after Tuesday night's win over the Pittsburgh Penguins that the 2018 NHL Entry Draft first round pick is an honest player.

He seems to be a real honest player, he seems to have some pace to his game and some skill. His ability right now to go all over the lineup-down, up, penalty kill, hasn't had any power play time-sometimes lines need balance too. And maybe he can provide that.
