The Detroit Red Wings selected goaltender Trey Augustine with the 41st pick (2nd round) of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, and he's representing the United States in the World Junior Championships.
He just led Team USA to a victory over Team Canada, a 4-1 win in which he made 38 saves.
And his teammates and coaches on Team USA didn't have enough good things to say about his performance in the 50th all-time meeting between the two national rivals.
Team USA head coach David Carle noted that Augustine was able to bounce back from his last pair of games that resulted in his GAA being an uncomfortable 3.94.
Augustine had allowed 4 goals on 22 shots in Team USA's 10-4 victory over Germany in the tournament opener; he also allowed 4 goals in a 4-3 overtime loss to Finland in the second game.
But he returned to the form that led Team USA to the gold medal last year, turning aside 38 of 39 shots against Canada.
Augustine, who is a sophomore with Michigan State University, has a bright future in the NHL as Detroit Red Wings goaltender, a job that he'll be soon competing for with fellow prospect Sebastian Cossa.
