The Detroit Red Wings beat the divisional foe Montreal Canadiens 4-2 on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena, gaining valuable ground in the Atlantic Division standings.
Goals from Jonatan Berggren, Alex DeBrincat, Andrew Copp (SHG) and Dylan Larkin (PPG) powered Detroit, who got 27 saves from goaltender Cam Talbot.
However, there was one notable absence of what had become a popular fan ritual during not only Red Wings games, but Detroit sporting events all over the state and even the country.
Fans have routinely chanted "Ja-red Goff", the name of the Detroit Lions quarterback during games. But in the wake of the Lions' unfortunate and stunning loss to the Washington Commanders last week, the chant was noticeably absent.
During the "Costa & Jansen with Heather" morning show on Detroit's 97.1 The Ticket, host Jim Costa explained that he was in attendance on Thursday night and noted that there were no Goff chants for the entirety of the evening.
Last year, the Lions made a run to the NFC Championship game for the 1st time in over three decades, and fans were understandably excited.
Jared Goff chants routinely broke out at Little Caesars Arena during both Red Wings and Detroit Pistons home games, as well as games for the Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans, the Grand Rapids Griffins, and even road games for both professional teams.
Detroit's success last year, combined with Detroit's 15-2 record this year, had fans pumped up about the potential of a Super Bowl win for what would have been the 1st time in franchise history.
But after their loss last week, the Lions will have to regroup and go for it next year, putting the dreams of fans on hold yet again.
