Red Wings coach Todd McLellan confirms the latest on injured defenseman Jeff Petry
Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan confirms the latest update on defenseman Jeff Petry, who departed Thursday's win over the Blue Jackets with an injury.
The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday 5-4 thanks to Jonatan Berggren's dramatic game-winner with 35 seconds left, but they also lost another defenseman to injury.
Jeff Petry was hurt in the 3rd period, and did not return to the game. He's already been confirmed to not be playing in tonight's game against the Winnipeg Jets at Canada Life Centre (7:00 PM, FanDuel Sports Detroit Extra, 97.1 The Ticket).
According to head coach Todd McLellan, he confirmed that Jeff Petry would be out of the lineup but also offered a silver lining, stating his hope that he wouldn't miss much time.
Pety was, as I said after the game in Columbus, evaluated again. He won't play tonight, but he's with the team on the road, which is a good sign. But once we get back to Detroit, he'll get the care he needs and hopefully it's short term.
The Red Wings did re-call defenseman William Lagesson from the Grand Rapids Griffins, but instead will be utilizing Alberg Johansson in Petry's place as explained by McLellan.
We're going to look at Albert tonight. He's been waiting patiently, and he's worked very hard in practice. He's going to get his opportunity, and we're really excited about that.
As far as stopping the dangerous Winnipeg power play, McLellen acknowledged that the Jets feature several weapons and that they'll need both good structure and goaltending - along with staying out of the box.
The power play is extremely dangerous, they have - sometimes a power play has only one or two scoring options, the rest are facilitators or playmakers. This power play has five guys who can shoot the puck past the goaltender, which makes it a little difficult to plan. They don't often show you the same look twice, and they're really good at retrieving garbage.
We'll need good goaltending and good structure.
