Red Wings complete trade to total $14M trade deadline cap space

With their trade of goaltender Ville Husso to the Anaheim Ducks, the Red Wings have opened up some considerable cap space for GM Steve Yzerman to work with.
The tenure of Detroit Red Wings goaltender Ville Husso officially came to a close yesterday.
He was dealt to the Anaheim Ducks for future considerations, freeing up some considerable cap space for general manager Steve Yzerman to work with.
While Husso's trade frees up a total of $3 million in projected cap space, the salary cap rules actually allow them to absorb as much as $14 million in a potential deal at the Trade Deadline.

And for those of you wondering how exactly that's possible, look no further:
At the deadline there is 22% of the season remaining. So if DET adds $14M of cap hit that day, it will only be on their cap for 14M * the 22% of the season remaining = the $3M of projected space they have for the season
Husso's tenure with the Red Wings was shaky at best
The Red Wings acquired Husso via trade with the St. Louis Blues in the summer of 2022 and immediately signed him to a 3-year contract with an AAV (average annual value) of $4.75 million.
He appeared in a career-best 56 games in his first year with the Red Wings, going 26-22-7 with a 3.11 GAA.
But thanks to various injury ailments, Husso was limited to just 19 games last year.
This year was his worst statistical output in the NHL. He won only a single game out of the 9 he started with Detroit, which included several trips back and forth between the American Hockey League.
His final stat line for this year with Detroit is 1-5-2 with a 3.69 GAA and .866 SV%.
