The Detroit Red Wings are gearing up for what might be the most important NHL trade deadline in recent memory. With plenty of cash on-hand and a shot at postseason contention, the time is now for GM Steve Yzerman to pull the trigger on a strategic trade to bolster his team.

The March 7th trade deadline is right around the corner, and the Detroit Red Wings have been one of the hottest teams in the NHL since hiring new head coach Todd McLellan.
That said, the team recently announced that forward Andrew Copp has completed successful surgery to repair a torn pectoral tendon, in addition to the recent departure of goaltender Ville Husso to the Anaheim Ducks.
With nearly $14 million in accrued cap-space to work with, Steve Yzerman is eagerly scanning the market for a key asset to strengthen his core.

With plenty of cash on hand and a shot at the playoffs, NHL insider Frank Seravalli weigh's in on Steve Yzerman's potential strategy leading up to the deadline.
«I think they could really use a defenseman. Will they do it? And go out and find a difference maker, preferably one that isn't a rental that they could keep for a while. I think that would make a ton of sense, man. They could really use someone like a Filip Hronek right now.

«I do think you're going to see an aggressive Steve Yzerman try and reward his group for the turnaround that they've displayed since Christmas when they made their coaching change on boxing day, bringing in Todd McLellan.»

-Frank Seravalli

According to Seravalli, it might be in the Wings' best interest to bring in some much needed help on the blue-line.
The hockey pundit mentions that big Vancouver Canucks D-man Filip Hronek could be a viable option -- and could be exactly what the Wings' need to cement their wildcard spot.
According to Puckpedia, Filip Hronek is signed to a 8 year, $58,000,000 contract with a cap hit of $7,250,000 per season, currently playing for the Vancouver Canucks.
While Hronek carries a heft price-tag, his impressive shutdown and 2-way capabilities could put the Wings's right over the top -- and Yzerman now has the budget to do so.
Is this the year Yzerman sends shockwaves down the NHL? Time will tell.
