Red Wings prospect Axel Sandin-Pellikka scores filthy shootout goal, named best defenseman at World Juniors
Detroit Red Wings prospect Axel Sandin-Pellikka has a tremendously high ceiling, especially after his performance for Team Sweden at the 2025 World Juniors.
Detroit Red Wings fans have every right to be excited about seeing Swedish defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka eventually patrol their blue line, especially after his performance in the recent World Junior Championships.
For the second straight year, he was named the tournament's best defenseman.
Just look at the filthy move he pulled during the shootout against Czechia in the bronze medal game:
Sandin Pellikka's future teammate World Junior Championships' class='lien_marqueur' target='_blank' rel='noopener'>Trey Augustine led the United States to the gold medal for the 2nd year straight.
However, Sandin-Pellikka kept the overall focus on the team, saying he was disappointed that they ultimately didn't come away with a medal and that he wasn't there for personal achievement.
I don't put any focus on it. I'm here to win a championship with the boys and not to earn any personal achievements. I'll keep up with the guys.
It sucks, of course. But I'm still proud of the guys. We've fought the whole tournament long, and it's in the small margins that we lost. It was like a lottery back and forth, I must say, with 3-on-3 in overtime and the shootout. The third period against the Finns, I dare say, was the best period of any team at the entire tournament.
We have done very well and should be proud of ourselves.
It's a great honour for me to keep up with all the boys on the team. It's a bunch of good guys, and I'll make sure to hang out with everyone this last night [in Ottawa].
The Red Wings took Sandin-Pellikka 17th overall in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, and hope that he could be the next great Swedish defenseman in their organization.
