Rockford IceHogs coach Anders Sorensen isn't hoping for any Chicago Blackhawks prospect to be cut from training camp.

Still, he wouldn't be disappointed if Landon Slaggert ended up on his roster.

«We'd be excited to have him, if that's what happens,» Sorensen said.

Sorensen has a long history with the Slaggert family. He first met Landon's father, Andy, in 2005 when Andy recruited players from Sorensen's Chicago Chill team to Notre Dame. The families have vacationed together, and Sorensen has coached Landon and his brother Graham.

«Knowing Anders for as long as we have was a factor in Landon's decision to sign with Chicago,» said Andy Slaggert, the associate head coach at Notre Dame. «We trust the organization to make the best decision for Landon's development.»

Landon Slaggert and other top prospects like Frank Nazar, Artyom Levshunov, and Drew Commesso will be featured in the upcoming Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase. Though the Hawks' prospect pool is deep, most will need to develop further in the AHL with the IceHogs.

Sorensen also mentioned Detroit Red Wings prospect Simon Edvinsson, who had a strong camp last season but was sent to the AHL to develop further.

«He had to show that he didn't belong in the AHL,» said Sorensen, «and he did a great job of that.»

Simon Edvinsson's eventual success in making the Red Wings' roster was a testament to the benefits of AHL experience.

Sorensen emphasized the value of AHL time:

"There's a lot of value to spending time in the AHL ... It's a good tool for development."
