Steve Yzerman has learned from former Ottawa Senators GM mistakes
Pierre Dorion recently lost his position as GM of the Ottawa Senators. His tenure was marked by poor decisions, and the club is years away from recovering.
A major issue was his mismanagement of fan expectations. Two years ago, he declared the rebuild over, which was premature. A year later, he claimed acquiring Jakob Chychrun earlier could have secured a playoff spot in 2023, but the team still fell short in 2024.
In contrast, Steve Yzerman, GM of the Red Wings for five years, avoids overpromising. Despite nearing playoffs in 2024, he doesn't guarantee a spot this year. While Yzerman has made mistakes, like blocking young talent with veterans, he manages fan expectations better. However, continued failure could lead to fan impatience regardless of Yzerman's cautious approach.
