Todd McLellan addresses Red Wings' 2025 Trade Deadline plans
The Red Wings are in the midst of another multi-game winning streak, could it push them to become buyers at the Trade Deadline for the 1st time in a long time?
It's seemed like a long time coming, but the Detroit Red Wings are one of the hottest teams in the National Hockey League.
They put together a second 7-game winning streak inside of a span of 20 games, the first time in franchise history that they've accomplished that feat. It marks a major change in fortune under new coach Todd McLellan, who took over a team that was tied for last place in the Eastern Conference on December 26.
The Trade Deadline is a month away, and could the Red Wings be considering becoming buyers for the first time in ages?
Right now, McLellan isn't prepared to answer such a question.
I'm not prepared to answer that question right now. That's a March question. I think the trade deadline's in March. I don't even know when it is.
We're a full month away. We've got so much in front of us right now, so that's not a question I'm going to answer right now.
When the Red Wings are down to just a few games remaining before the Deadline arrives, they'll have a better idea, according to McLellan.
When it gets down to two or three, maybe we'll figure it out.
The Red Wings haven't been Deadline buyers in years
It's been years since the Red Wings have acquired assets at the Trade Deadline rather than part with them.
Some of their more recent additions have included over-the-hill veterans like Erik Cole and David Legwand, for whom former GM Ken Holland traded young prospects that eventually went on to have productive careers for.
