On this day in 1957, the Detroit Red Wings traded future legend Johnny Bucyk to the Boston Bruins for another future legend, Terry Sawchuk.
Bucyk, who had only played one full season for Detroit, became one of the Bruins' all-time greats, scoring 545 goals and 794 assists in 1,436 games over 20 seasons. He won two Stanley Cups with the Bruins and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981.
Already an established star, Sawchuk further solidified his legacy with the Red Wings, winning four Stanley Cups and four Vezina Trophies during his career. Both players left an indelible mark on their respective teams, making this trade one of the most significant in NHL history.
Each team benefitted immensely, with Bucyk becoming a cornerstone in Boston and Sawchuk continuing his dominance in goal for Detroit.
