Detroit goaltender Alex Lyon poised for a breakout season
Alex Lyon, starting goaltender for the Detroit Red Wings is hungry for success next season.
The 31 year old net minder recently represented team USA at the IIHF World Hockey Championships where he was playing extremely well before falling victim to a freak accident where his hand unfortunately got sliced by a skate blade. Although he is still in rehabilitation from his injury, Alex Lyon is reported to be good to for the season opener in October 2024 and is poised to have a massive breakout season between the pipes.
Coming into a new contract next season, Lyon is hungry for the playoffs and feels confident that next season will be different than years prior. During a podcast last weekend, head coach Derek Lalonde had some high praise for the talented netminder:
"Lyon provided much-needed stability in net for the Red Wings, stepping up while goaltender Ville Husso battled multiple lower-body injuries this season. Huge kudos to our management group to have the vision of not only signing him, but not (putting) him through waivers," Lalonde said about Lyon. "That's something we discussed a lot. Thank God they didn't. Great vision by them in the big picture of things and with his emergence, it's exciting.'" Could this be the season we see Alex Lyon emerge as a Vezina candidate? The Detroit Red Wings will need Lyon to bring his A-game if the Red Wings want a shot a Stanley Cup glory.
