The Detroit Red Wings' highly touted prospect goaltender is making his way to the NHL for the first time in his career, having been called up from the AHL.

Hold on to your hats!

The Detroit Red Wings have officially called up goaltender Sebastian Cossa from the AHL thanks to the injury to Cam Talbot in yesterday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks.

During the second period, Talbot suffered a lower-body injury and removed himself from the game; he was replaced by Ville Husso.

With Alex Lyon already unavailable for Detroit's upcoming road trip that begins tomorrow night in Boston, the Red Wings needed another goaltender to back up Husso.

Cossa's call up was made necessary thanks to the unavailability of Jack Campell, who was placed in the NHLPA Player Assistance Program earlier this year.

So far with the Griffins this year, Cossa has gone 9-4-1 with a 2.21 GAA, a .925 SV% and one shutout.

Before this year began, GM Steve Yzerman laid out his expectations for Cossa, whom he selected in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft with the 15th pick.

Regarding Sebastian, he had a very good year. We're very pleased with his progress.

I don't rule out any player coming to training camp and standing on his head or playing brilliantly and forcing us to re-evaluate our plan, but right now, I'd anticipate Sebastian playing and playing an even bigger role in Grand Rapids next year.

We will look to add a goaltender there, and I don't see us really doing three goaltenders [in the NHL] throughout the season. That wasn't really the plan last year either, but injury kinda dictated that.

Will Sebastian Cossa get his first NHL start soon?
