The Red Wings seized a 2-0 lead in the first period against the New Jersey Devils after goals from Vladimir Tarasenko and Lucas Raymond, who scored for the fifth consecutive game.
However, they started getting into penalty trouble, and the Devils made them pay - but in controversial fashion.
The play in question took place just nine seconds into Detroit's first penalty kill of the night when Dougie Hamilton beat goaltender Cam Talbot with a short side shot from the top of the slot, halving Detroit's lead.
Detroit challenged the goal, believing that New Jersey's Stefan Noesen interfered with goaltender Cam Talbot's ability to do his job.
After a lengthy video review, the officials upheld the goal to the dismay of the crowd; it put Detroit right back on the penalty kill since they lost the challenge.
New Jersey scored again immediately afterward, and Detroit's two-goal lead had evaporated.
New Jersey eventually won the game by a 5-4 final.
Afterward, head coach Derek Lalonde said that the officials told him that Talbot initiated contact with Noesen, not the reverse as Detroit believed.
It was an explanation and outcome that satisfied nobody on the Detroit side of things, but such is life sometimes.
The Red Wings also didn't help themselves by continuing their parade to the penalty box.
Ben Chiarot was whistled for a four-minute double minor as time expired in the second period, and Jack Hughes scored early in the third with him in the box.
