Detroit Red Wings preparing for physical grudge match against divisional foe Senators
The Red Wings will want to fire back at the Senators, who beat them 2-1 last month in Ottawa, when they face one another in tonight's clash at Little Caesars Arena.
The battles between the Atlantic Division foes Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators have grown increasingly heated in recent years, and the next matchup between them happens to take place tonight.
The Red Wings host the Senators on home ice at Little Caesars Arena for the 1st time this season (7:00 PM, FanDuel Sports Detroit, 97.1 The Ticket).
Detroit is aiming to even up their season series against Ottawa, who beat them 2-1 thanks to Josh Norris' go-ahead goal in the final minute of regulation in their game on December 5 at Canadian Tire Centre.
The Red Wings know it's going to be a physical battle. Defenseman Moritz Seider, who has elevated his own performance under new head coach Todd McLellan, stated that he and his teammates must not only be physically engaged from the get-go but also must keep their mental edge.
Obviously, they mean more for us; we need to be mentally but also physically engaged right from the start. I think it will be a good challenge for us to set the bar for the upcoming week.
Obviously we want to take care of home ice and get back on winning ice, I'd say. I think we're below .500 at home, and that's a good step in the right direction with a win tonight.
The Red Wings are a single game below .500 at home this year with a 9-10-2 record. But Seider and his teammates know how valuable that divisional games can be in the standings.
I mean, those are almost 4-point games right now. You can close the gap and be right in it, obviously they mean more.
As evidenced by remarks from his teammates, Seider also feels the energy and better vibes that have surrounded the club since the change was made to coach Todd McLellan.
Very excited, energized for sure. But also, you have to take it day by day. Come here with a mindset of getting better, working hard, and the rest will kind of fall into place anyway.
The Red Wings will be wise to take it to the Senators early and prove to them that their loss earlier in the year was an anomaly!
