Detroit Red Wings Prospect Dmitri Buchelnikov Breaks KHL Team Record
Detroit Red Wings prospect Dmitri Buchelnikov continues to season in the KHL in his native Russia, and has now broken a Vityaz Moscow Region team record!
The
Detroit Red Wings have a bevy of young, exciting prospects that general manager Steve Yzerman has worked to accumulate since returning to the Motor City in April 2019.
One of the prospects that fans are excited about is Russian forward Dmitri Buchelnikov, who they selected in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft with the 52nd overall pick.
He currently plays for Hockey Club Vityaz Moscow Region in the Bobrov Division of the Kontinental Hockey League, and he's just broken a team record with his 34th assist of the year.
He broke the previous team-high mark of 32 assists that was held by
Justin Danforth, Kaspars Daugavins and Miro Aaltonen.
Is Dmitri Buchelnikov poised to eventually be one of the next great Red Wings Russian players?
Fans of the Red Wings who are old enough won't soon forget the incredible dynamic that former head coach Scotty Bowman put together on the ice that became known by the legendary nickname of "The Russian 5".
Forwards Sergei Fedorov, Igor Larionov, and Slava Kozlov up front with defensemen Slava Fetisov and Vladimir Konstantinov on the back end was the 1st time in NHL history that an all-Russian line hit the ice.
The Red Wings also got a Hall of Fame career from Pavel Datsyuk, who was just a rookie on the loaded 2001-02 team that won the Stanley Cup.
While it's been years since the Red Wings have had a top Russian talent as a regular on their team, Buchelnikov could just be it.
