Dominik Shine tells amazing story after 1st NHL game as part of Red Wings win
31 year old Dominik Shine finally appeared in his 1st NHL game in last night's 5-2 Red Wings, and described how he got the news.
Not only did the Detroit Red Wings pick up a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings for their 3rd straight win, but it was also the NHL debut of one longtime member of the organization.
31 year old Dominik Shine finally made his NHL debut after several years of playing with the Grand Rapids Griffins, and played just under 10 minutes and was credited with a pair of takeaways.
Afterward, Shine explained how he got the news that he was making his NHL debut, along with the fact that his parents had to watch the occasion from a beach in Hawaii.
I got the call around 10:30 (a.m. from Griffins general manager Shawn Horcoff). I was driving my son (Cooper, 21 months) to get some ice skates. It was crazy. So thrilled for myself but also my parents and everyone who put in the hard work to get me here where I'm at.
My parents landed in Maui yesterday for a vacation so they couldn't make it. That was pretty funny. My mom is probably pretty upset, but they were watching from the beach."
"There was a point last year, I had my first child and the American League, you're away from your family a lot. I was thinking about maybe being done, and once I had my kid, I thought about it's really special for him to see me play and I'd play one more year and see what happens.
Shine said that his young son Cooper recognized him against the glass during the pre-game skate, making the experience all the more special for him.
To be here today, it's amazing. He recognized me in warmups. To see him smile, I can't put it into words.
