The Detroit Red Wings appeared to score their 5th goal of the game against the Canadiens, but it was waived off due to goalie interference.

The Detroit Red Wings did what they had to do against the divisional foe Montreal Canadiens, beating them 4-2 and gaining valuable ground in the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference in the process.

Goals from Jonatan Berggren, Alex Debrincat, Andrew Copp and Dylan Larkin (in his 700th career game) powered the Red Wings, but they feel they should have had a 5th goal on the board.

Christian Fischer's would-be goal in the 3rd period was wiped out due to goaltender interference.

Replays indicated that Detroit forward Michael Rasmussen was pushed into Canadiens goalie Samuel Montembeault by defenseman David Savard, which was the basis of Red Wings coach Todd McLellan's goaltender interference challenge.

Unfortunately, the officials decided there wasn't enough to overturn their call on the ice, and Detroit was penalized for the failed challenge as a result.

McLellan wasn't happy with the call, saying

We asked the players to be aggressive and I still think it's a goal or I wouldn't have challenged it. Ras (Rasmussen) had every right to go in after a loose puck and made every effrot to avoid (the goaltender, and Montreal defenseman David) Savard had his stick on his hips.

When we challenged, it was 'OK, it's going to go, it's going to go one way or the other and if it goes against, let's get ready and we can do it'. They (the penalty kill) did a real good job.

The Red Wings penalty killers did their job when Detroit was penalized for a bench minor after the failed goaltender interference challenge, a welcome sight considering their poor penalty killing efficiency this year.
