Will arbitration be necessary for these two Red Wings?
Detroit Red Wings restricted free agents Joe Veleno and Jonatan Berggren must decide by 5 p.m. today whether to opt for arbitration for their next contracts.
This process can often prompt a new contract before arbitration is completed. Veleno, who scored 12 goals in 2023-24, is projected to earn around $2 million, with AFP Analytics suggesting a two-year deal at $1.98 million per season. Berggren is forecasted to receive a one-year deal worth $874,000.
The Red Wings aim to carefully manage these contracts to save cap space for long-term deals for Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond, potentially costing over $17 million. Arbitration outcomes are based on statistics and comparables. Berggren has 17 goals and 34 points in 76 career games.
The NHLPA will issue a press release about those who filed for arbitration, often intensifying negotiations, with decisions rendered within 48 hours.
