NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman disappoints fans while addressing his future
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, who is a polarizing figure for most hockey fans, has directly addressed his future in the job that he's held since the early 1990s.
He's been one of the most polarizing sports executives in North America, and given that hockey fans are some of the most passionate on earth, his tenure has been marked with controversy and pushback.
Gary Bettman has presided as Commissioner over the National Hockey League since 1994, and has overseen massive expansion into non-traditional markets.
On the opposite side of the positive, Bettman has also overseen three separate work stoppages, with the most notorious being the 1st in North American professional sports history that an entire season was wiped out; it was also the first year the Stanley Cup wasn't awarded since the early 1900s.
However, for anyone hoping to see a new figurehead in the National Hockey League, you'll have to do some waiting. Bettman has recently indicated that he has no plans to go anywhere anytime soon, feels "energized", and loves what he does.
I love what I do, I'm energized by it. The league has been growing, I've got great support of ownership. Hockey's in a good place and I'm thrilled to be a part of it.
If I didn't have the energy and I didn't love what I do and get thrilled every day to go to work, then I'd have to think about slowing down.
However, Bettman acknowledged the fact that Father Time is undefeated and comes for everyone eventually.
Father time always wins and I'll have to deal with that. But at least for the foreseeable future, I like where I am.
Better buckle up hockey fans, because it looks like Commissioner Bettman is here for the long haul.
