As we approach the annual Thanksgiving holiday, it typically marks a date that National Hockey League teams use to gauge the progress of their season.
The Red Wings (8-10-2) occupy the 6th spot in the Atlantic Division, and while they're only four points behind the rival Tampa Bay Lightning, multiple uninspiring performances have hindered what should have been additional points in the standings.
Not only that, but they also essentially confirm that this is who the Red Wings are at this point.
The oddsmakers aren't painting the rosiest picture for the Red Wings' chances of breaking their lengthy postseason drought, which dates back to 2016.
MonkeyPuck has Detroit's chances of a postseason spot at 15.1 percent:
The lack of postseason hockey has been a source of frustration for the considerable Detroit Red Wings fan base, a good percentage of whom feel that the team should be farther along in their rebuilding process under beloved former captain Steve Yzerman.
Even some of Yzerman's staunchest backers have found it increasingly difficult to justify being so far out of a playoff position as he approaches the midway point of his sixth season since taking over the role of GM from Ken Holland in 2019.
Only the Buffalo Sabres, another Atlantic Division foe of the Red Wings, has a lengthier postseason drought.
Buffalo last played beyond the final day of the regular season in the spring of 2011, a seven-game Round 1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.
Meanwhile, the Red Wings made the playoffs in 2016 and were promptly eliminated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in five games.
It's also been over a decade since the Red Wings last advanced past the opening round of the postseason, which took place in 2013 over the Anaheim Ducks.
